Het Alhambra ligt in het hart van de stad Granada, maar op de top van de heuvel van de Sabica. De afstand van het centrum is slechts 1 kilometer, maar het verschil is belangrijk.

The Alcazaba - The citadel of the Alhambra in Granada

La Alcazaba es la parte más primitiva de la Alhambra, germen de lo que llegaría a convertirse en la ciudad palatina, sede del poder de la dinastía nazarí.  Es aquí, en la fortaleza, donde encontramos algunas de las torres más importantes y significativas del conjunto. Su forma triangular avanza sobre Granada a modo de la proa de un barco, de ahí que su situación sea estratégicamente inmejorable. Entrando en la Alcazaba, durante nuestra visita guiada a la Alhambra y el Generalife, pasaremos al pie de torres tan impresionantes como la del Homenaje o la Quebrada.

DE DEUREN VAN DE ALHAMBRA

The palatine city of the Alhambra is protected by approximately two kilometers of wall and by some thirty towers that form a defensive structure essential for its security. A closed city where a series of gates facilitated access from outside. Likewise we must also highlight the interior gates that allowed the compartmentalization of intramural spaces. Hence, in the Alhambra, it is necessary to distinguish between exterior and interior gates, their structures being completely different. The interiors are gates that normally have a direct access while the exteriors have access in a bend or double bend.

De Medina de stad van het Alhambra

City, stands out amongst the different areas of the Palatine city of the Alhambra. An urban structure where the real street next to the real low street were the main axes of the whole. Today the Royal Street remains the backbone of the monumental enclosure.  Walking along the royal Street we will see some of the doors of the Alhambra, like the gate of the seven floors or the gate of the wine.

The palace of Carlos V in the Alhambra of Granada

Symbol of imperial power, the Emperor Charles V will leave an important footprint in the Alhambra. His visit to the city, in the spring of 1526 during his honeymoon with the Empress Isabel (Elizabeth) will mark a before and after, not only in the Alhambra but also in the whole city of Granada. The place chosen to build his palace in Granada was a symbol of the new power that is definitively consolidated in our city after his grandparents, the Catholic kings, took Granada in 1492.

The Alhambra was the palatial city where the Nasrid sultans consolidated the power of their dynasty and next to those medieval palaces the emperor will raise his palace, testimony of a new order, of a new stage.

El Generalife

Situado fuera del recinto amurallado de la Alhambra, el Yannat al-Arif o “jardín del arquitecto” se asienta en la ladera del cerro del Sol separado de la Alhambra por un foso, la actual cuesta de los chinos o la cuesta del Rey Chico.  El Generalife es un conjunto de huertas medievales, jardines, acequias y una almunia o casa de campo utilizada por los sultanes nazaríes como lugar de descanso. Las huertas e incluso el palacio se adaptan perfectamente al terreno, todo en diferentes niveles. Se concibió el conjunto como una finca rústica, acompañada de huertas que se siguen cultivando de manera tradicional y que en época medieval abastecían a la corte. En nuestra visita guiada conoceremos este lugar independiente de la Alhambra, pero estrechísimamente unido a ella.

The Nasrid Palaces III - the Palace of the Lions

And finally, our guided tour of the Alhambra takes us to the Palace of the Lions. In this palace, we will find the zenith of Nasrid architecture and decoration that reached its most critical moment in the hand of the Sultan who had had it built, Muhammad V (1354 / 59-1362 / 91). The lacework of the plasterwork, its tiling, its stalactite roofs and above all the balance of its proportions will make us believe that we are truly in paradise.

Nasrid palaces II - Comares

The second of the Nasrid palaces, COMARES, which you will also visit during our guided tour of the Alhambra and the Generalife, is a faithful reflection of the Hispano-Muslim architectural concept where the polyvalence of the spaces prevails. Royal residence, also houses the Throne Room. Built by Yusuf I (1333-1354), everything revolves around a rectangular courtyard, that of the myrtles where intimacy, water and nature make it a true oasis. It is made up of the Comares façade, the Patio de los Arrayanes, the Sala de la Barca, the Throne Room and the Hammam or Comares spa room.

The Nasrid Palaces I - El Mexuar

The Nasrid Palaces, the Dar al-Mamlaka, are the set of different palaces or royal houses built in the Nasrid period by the most important sultans of fourteenth century. Although they are together they were built at different times and today they are the result of the evolution of time itself.

There are three: the Mexuar, Comares and Leones.
